Crystal Palace planning contract extension talks with Man United target Jean-Philippe Mateta

Jean-Phillipe Mateta has proven himself an invaluable asset to Crystal Palace, as he enters his fourth year at the club, with 12 goals and 2 assists so far this season.

This fact is substantiated by the Frenchman’s world-class performance while representing his country at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, coming away with a goal and a silver medal in their final game against Spain.

With all these these accolades now common knowledge within international football, Crystal Palace will want to hold on tightly to their star striker before another European club snaffles him up.

Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim has already expressed an interest in signing Mateta this summer, as well as Diego Simeone’s Atlético de Madrid, according to transfermarkt.

The Olympian might be exactly the missing ingredient for realising Amorim’s flexible 3-4-2-1 plan, which is why Crystal Palace have begun talks with Mateta regarding his future.

According to The Peoples Person, Mateta is “seen as the perfect fit for Amorim’s system”.

However, with United struggling to finance their new plan for success, Mateta’s £40M price tag may be out of Amorim’s price range, especially after blowing £72M on the underwhelming Rasmus Holjund.

Also, Troy Deeney, via The Mirror, disagrees with the notion that Mateta could be the answer to United fans’ prayers, saying “”No, because he’s not the answer for Palace, so why is he going to be the answer for Manchester United?”

These are factors that Amorim will have to weigh up in deciding not only if United can afford to take the risk on Mateta, but also if the Frenchman is even the right fit for the Red Devils.
