David Ornstein of The Athletic reports this evening that Andrea Berta is set to become Arsenal’s new Sporting Director (£).
The Gunners have gone through a lengthy process since the surprise departure of Edu in November, and it now appears as if the former Atletico Madrid man will take up the mantle in North London.
The 53 year old Italian, who has also worked with Parma and Genoa, will come on board ahead of a pivotal summer for the club. With focus required on the attacking elements of the squad, he’ll be tasked with securing deals for forwards who can make a difference and take the team to a different level.
There are also contractual issues to sort out, with players like William Saliba and Bukayo Saka reaching a point where renewals are important.
The positive aspect of this appointment is his immediate availability. Unlike other candidates, he doesn’t have to work until June or undergo any gardening leave, so hopefully plans already in place can be finalised without too much hassle.
More on this as it transpires.
