Bills Receive Strong Criticism for $80 Million Move

The Buffalo Bills are entering the offseason potentially a move or two away from finally reaching the Super Bowl. Over the last few years, they have been so close to making it to the big game, but have been denied.

Josh Allen and company are loaded with talent. However, there are areas that the Bills need to improve.

Ahead of NFL free agency next week, Buffalo chose to make a major contract commitment to one of its own.

Greg Rousseau, one of the team's defensive ends, received a massive four-year, $80 million contract extension.

Clearly, the Bills value him, but was he really worth that kind of money?

Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated has given Buffalo a very poor grade for the move. He only gave a C- grade and explained why he doesn't like the extension.

"While the signings of both Shakir and Bernard got terrific grades in our tracker, this is a bit more risky. Rousseau is a good player, racking up 25 sacks and 66 quarterback hits over his first four seasons. However, he's never had more than eight sacks in a season and appears to be more of a secondary pass rusher than the leader of that group on a contending team."

He continued forward, giving reason for hope but also doubling down on not loving the decision from the Bills.

"At 25 years old, there's certainly still room to grow. That said, his $54 million guaranteed ranks fifth for all defensive ends, and while the number factors in a rising cap and potential for improvement, that's a stretch considering Rousseau's production."

Rousseau is coming off of a 2024 season that saw him play in 16 games. He recorded 53 tackles, eight sacks, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and three defended passes.
