How Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham’s penalty stats compare to Premier League rivals this season
Arsenal sit 16 points behind Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title but now have two games to try and reduce that gap to 10 points for the final nine games of the season. The Reds have played two more games than the Gunners with Mikel Arteta’s side in action against Manchester United on Sunday before hosting Chelsea a week later.
Liverpool will be in Carabao Cup final action next weekend so had their league meeting with Aston Villa moved forward, which is why they have played an extra game. On Saturday afternoon, Arsenal’s title rivals had to come from behind to beat bottom-of-the-table Southampton at Anfield.
Will Smallbone pounced on some hesitation from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to score in front of the Kop End but Liverpool came out roaring the second half as Darwin Nunez levelled before winning a penalty, which Mohamed Salah scored. The Egyptian netted a second goal two minutes from time, with that also coming from the spot-kick.
How many penalties has each Premier League team had this season?
Liverpool have now been awarded nine penalties this season following their two spotkicks against Southampton. That is seven more than their nearest title challengers Arsenal. Out of all the London clubs, Fulham and Brentford have been awarded the most with four each while West Ham and Chelsea have been awarded penalties three times.
Palace, like Arsenal, have been awarded two while Tottenham Hotspur have just been awarded one. Spurs’ penalty came against Wolves back in December but Heung-min Son missed from 12 yards with the score at 1-1. The game finished 2-2.
Two of Chelsea’s three penalties came in a 4-3 win over Spurs back in early December, with Cole Palmer scoring both of those. He also scored from the spot in a 4-2 win over Brighton at the end of September.
Arsenal’s penalties this season
Both of the Gunners’ penalties this campaign have come in the same game, as Arteta’s side scored twice from 12 yards in their 5-2 win over West Ham at the end of November.
