How Man Utd compare to Arsenal and Liverpool in terms of overall silverware

Manchester United are currently experiencing one of their most difficult seasons of the Premier League era but they remain one of the biggest and most talked about clubs in English football due to their illustrious history of winning silverware.

Even last season, in a campaign largely overshadowed by underwhelming performances on the pitch, an early Champions League exit, and scrutiny surrounding former boss Erik ten Hag, United were able to add to their impressive trophy cabinet with a stunning FA Cup final win over Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley.

It marked United’s 13th FA Cup triumph and leaves them just one short of equalling Arsenal’s record-breaking tally of 14 wins in the competition.

But where do the Red Devils sit in the all-time table of trophies won by English clubs? and how do their achievements compare to Liverpool and Arsenal? Here’s all you need to know.

Who has won the most league titles in English football?

Statistically speaking Manchester United are the most successful team in top-flight history with 20 league titles compared to Liverpool’s 19. Sir Alex Ferguson famously vowed in the 1980s to knock a then dominant Reds team off their perch in the early years of his tenure at Old Trafford, and notched his side in front with a league title triumph in the 2010/11 season before furthering the gap in his final season in 2012/13, marking United’s 13th Premier League title.

Since then Liverpool have reduced the gap by winning the 2019/20 league title in emphatic fashion with 99 points - and they now have their sights set on winning their 20th top-flight title and their second of the Premier League era in Arne Slot’s first season, which would take them level with United.

Arsenal with 13 league titles and the third most successful team in history. Their last Premier League title in 2003/04 saw them become just the second team in history to go unbeaten for an entire to-flight season after Preston North End in 1888/89.

Manchester City remain the only team in history to achieve four successive league titles after their achievement last term took them into double figures, with six of those coming under Pep Guardiola. The Sky Blues are notably the only team to achieve 100 points in a top-flight season.

All-time table of trophies won by English clubs

Statistically speaking, Liverpool are the most successful team in English football with 69 trophies in total. They are one ahead of United, who have achieved 68 major honours in their 147-year history.

Liverpool are behind United on league titles and FA Cups but boast a superior record in Europe with six Champions League’s compared to United’s three and four Europa League honours compared to one.

The Anfield club are also the most successful team in League Cup history with 10 honours compared with United’s six in the competition. Arne Slot’s side face Newcastle in this year’s final and could yet extend that illustrious record.
