'Treading water': Joe Cole aims subtle dig at Fosun in assessment of Wolves, shares fresh…

Wolves strengthened their Premier League survival hopes with a point against Everton, moving them six clear of the relegation zone.

On a night where Matheus Cunha served the first match of his suspension, Marshall Munetsi scored his first goal for Wolves, equalising after Jack Harrison opened the scoring.

It was a decent performance from the hosts, who pushed till the very end for a winner but couldn’t muster a moment of quality.

Wolves fans were impressed with Jean-Ricner Bellegarde against the Toffees, and some supporters think he can be Cunha’s long-term replacement.

However, for all of the positive performances on the pitch, Joe Cole criticised their issues off the field that have seen them plummet down the Premier League table.

Joe Cole aims subtle dig at Wolves owner Fosun

In the space of five years, Wolves have gone from playing in the Europa League to constantly battling against relegation.

Years of asset stripping the squad without investing have come back to bite them, and Fosun is one of the main reasons to blame for their downward spiral.

Speaking on TNT Sports post-game, Cole highlighted that there has been a lack of investment in the squad they’ve been ‘treading water’ for a few years.

“I don’t know what’s happened behind the scenes, but it seems like the investment has been taken away and they seem like they’ve been treading water as a club for a few years now,” Cole said.

Despite the hardships supporters have experienced and watching their club crumble before their eyes, the former Chelsea midfielder praised how loud the Wolves fans were in a less-than-ideal situation.

“I think they’ve got one of the best, most loudest fanbases in the league and I think it’s just crying out for someone to go, ‘this is what we are, and this is where we’re going’, and we’ll be committed to that because they stuck with their team tonight.”

Joe Cole predicts Wolves to avoid relegation

A point for Wolves edges them closer to survival. Ipswich were beaten by Crystal Palace earlier on Saturday, while Leicester are in action against Chelsea on Sunday.

The two clubs will have to claw a six-point gap to leapfrog the Wanderers into 17th, and Cole is confident they will do enough to stay up this season.

“Any point you get at this stage of the season keeps that distance with the teams below you is good and I agree I think they’re playing well,” he said. “I think they’ve playing well enough to stay up. You just think for the sake of the league and the neutral, you want it to be tight down there.

“You want it to be exciting because that’s what our leagues are always about, but that’s down to the other teams. I think Wolves will just keep doing what they’re doing and keep plugging away, and they’ll pick up enough results between now and the end of the season.”

Wolves can put clear daylight between them and the bottom three next weekend as they travel to bottom side Southampton.
