You may be wondering how Liverpool were permitted to make six substitutions during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League.

After deploying three changes at half-time at Anfield, Diogo Jota and Wataru Endo were introduced by the Reds during the second period – reaching the usual total allotment of five switches per top-flight fixture.

However, in the final minute Jarell Quansah was also sent on from the bench in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

This sixth substitution by the Reds was allowed as a result of Saints defender Jan Bednarek being withdrawn in the first half in line with concussion protocols.

When one team makes a change as part of the official concussion procedure, the opposition also receives an additional substitution to maintain fair balance.
