Ruben Amorim was hired to replace Erik ten Hag when he was sacked earlier in the season.

Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy is not sure whether Ruben Amorim will be a successful replacement for Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. Amorim was the unanimous choice to replace Ten Hag when he was sacked by United back in October of last year, but has not managed to improve results during his first months in charge.

United are almost certain to record their lowest ever Premier League finish this season, while their only hopes of winning a trophy or qualifying for Europe both now rely on winning the Europa League. United drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad in the last 16 first leg this week and face a pivotal rematch on Thursday night.

Regardless of how the season ends, Amorim will almost certainly get more time to prove himself capable of the role but Ten Hag's former assistant McCarthy is still unsure if he will live up to the massive expectations at Old Trafford.

Benni McCarthy gives verdict on Ruben Amorim

Benni McCarthy spent two seasons at Manchester United before he left last summer upon expiration of his coaching contract. He was part of the staff that won both the FA Cup and League Cup, but chose to pursue his own managerial ambitions prior to Erik ten Hag's final few months at the club.

The South African has a lot of respect towards Ten Hag for the opportunity he gave him at Old Trafford and is unsure whether Ruben Amorim will prove to be an improvement on the former boss.

"He's clever. He's a smart coach. He's young," McCarthy told BBC Sport Africa. "He might not have all the answers, but I think he's got a good philosophy. He's got a team behind him, that supports him very well, that he brought with him. I want him (Amorim) to succeed. I want him to win things so that we can enjoy our weekends, have a glass of wine and chill, relax, because you know your team is going to do the business."

"I was given an incredible opportunity to work with one of the biggest and best clubs in the world under the guidance of Erik ten Hag," he added. "I learned utmost professionalism because the manager I worked under was not just a disciplinarian, but he was the best and one of the most unbelievable professionals I've ever seen in the game. Extremely hard-working, very dedicated, very passionate, he planned on being the Man United coach for the next 10 years. That was his vision."
