'Not at my best': Liverpool loanee apologises on Instagram after 'calamitous' mistake this weekend

Liverpool have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in Alisson Becker, something that will be weighing on Giorgi Mamardashvili’s mind ahead of this summer.

The Georgia international was signed by the Reds last summer for £34m before returning to Valencia on loan for the season, with Mamardashvili expected to become Liverpool’s new long-term starting goalkeeper.

Despite the 24-year-old’s reputation in the European game, Mamardashvili has been under fire recently at Valencia after a number of poor performances that have left the legendary Spanish club fighting for survival in La Liga.

And although the Mestella side managed to win this weekend against Real Valladolid, Mamardashvili took to Instagram to apologise for his performance and his form of late.

Giorgi Mamardashvili admits he isn’t at his ‘best’ after latest Valencia mistake

Taking to social media, the on-loan Liverpool goalkeeper shared his disappointment at his recent performances, with Mamardashvili massively at fault for Valladolid’s equalising goal having passed the ball an opposing attacker.

Mamardashvili wrote: “I know I’m not at my best right now, but I’m convinced that challenges make us stronger. I’m putting all my effort into getting back to my best version as soon as possible. Thank you very much, Mestalla, for the support! Today’s victory is very important for us and fills us with energy to continue. Amunt always.”

With Marca noting Mamardashvili’s mistake as potentially ‘calamitous’ for Valencia had Los Ches failed to pick up all three points, the Georgia international is painfully aware of how poor his form has been since the turn of the year.

And for Liverpool, a big discussion has to be held on what to do about Mamardashvili, who is clearly not ready for Premier League football let alone replacing one of the world’s best goalkeepers in Alisson next season.

Liverpool have to consider second loan spell for Giorgi Mamardashvili

With rumours already circulating that Liverpool are open to loaning out Mamardashvili for a second season based on the Georgian’s performances, there is a realistic chance that the 24-year-old does not return to Anfield for long this summer.

Indeed, Alisson recently enjoyed the performance of his career against PSG with the Liverpool goalkeeper’s stock as high as it has ever been after the Brazilian’s heroics in the UEFA Champions League.

And with Mamardashvili seemingly causing a mistake every week for Valencia, the young goalkeeper could benefit greatly from a second year away from the Premier League spotlight and out on loan with a top team in Europe, a decision that could be worth it’s weight in gold in years to come.
