They did however win 7-1 in midweek against PSV, to al but book them a place in the quarter-finals of what is arguably their only chance at silverware left this season.
Mikel Arteta will be disappointed that the Gunners have dropped 13 points behind Liverpool in the title race. However, United manager Amorim described him as an “inspiration” in his pre-match press conference.
Amorim was asked about if what Arteta did at Arsenal is similar to what he needs to do at Old Trafford. He responded by saying: “I think its a different club, in that aspect the way that Arteta dealt with it is an inspiration for everybody – I will not have the time like Arteta did.
“We just need to survive, the players on Sunday and me, during this [relegation] escape.”
Amorim will be tasked with overhauling the Man United squad this summer as he looks to turn the fortune of a club that is in one of the lowest points in it’s history.
Arteta performed turnaround at Arsenal that United could dream of
When Arteta became Arsenal boss, the club was in a state of below-par finishes in the Premier League. The year before Arteta was appointed they had three consecutive seasons outside the top four. He has since made them Premier League title contenders for three seasons in a row.
Furthermore, if you look at Arteta’s very first starting XI, there is only one player that remains a regular in his team, meaning that recruitment was key to his success.
The partnership of Arteta and Edu was able to bring players such as Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and William Saliba to the Emirates. Amorim will need to perform a similar miracle to get United back into the Champions League and contending for the league title.
