The suicidal man reportedly traveled from Indiana to Washington, D.C., on Saturday, prompting local police to notify the Secret Service.
His motives remain unknown at this point.
The Internal Affairs Division of the DC Metropolitan Police is leading the investigation into the shooting.
During Trump's first term, a similar incident occurred in August 2020 when a man was shot by the Secret Service while the president was giving a press briefing inside the West Wing.
