“They couldn’t afford me” – Brentford star admits price tag stopped transfer, wants to work under manager

Brentford defender Sepp van den Berg has admitted he was open to joining PSV Eindhoven in the summer, but they simply couldn’t afford him.

[Voetbal Primeur](https://www.voetbalprimeur.nl/nieuws/1252100/van-den-berg-eerlijk-over-interesse-psv-en-feyenoord.html) have an interview with the Brentford star today in which he talks about his busy summer transfer window as he left Liverpool.

The centre-back had returned to Anfield after his latest loan spell away and was initially included in Arne Slot’s squad as he assessed his options.

It was later made clear he was not a part of the Dutchman’s plans, though, opening the door to a departure.

He had plenty of options too, with Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven keen on taking him back to the Netherlands and Bayer Leverkusen eyeing up a move as they strengthened Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Ultimately, though, it was Brentford who won the race, paying €23.6m to sign him from Liverpool towards the end of August.

They used their spending power to their advantage, with Van den Berg already explaining that Leverkusen had to wait to sell before they could buy.

He’s now explained it was a similar story for the Dutch clubs, with PSV simply unable to afford him despite his desire to go there.

“There was a lot of interest, and I knew myself that I wanted to make a transfer. I had a lot of conversations, including with PSV and Feyenoord,” he said.

“I have to say that I had a slightly more in-depth conversation with PSV and Peter Bosz. I really liked that. I would be lying if I didn’t want to play under him (Peter Bosz) once.

“PSV, looking at what they did last season and the Champions League campaign this season: it was certainly an option. I was absolutely open to it and had good conversations, but they couldn’t afford me. That’s it. That ultimately made my choice easier.”
