Leicester City team news v Chelsea with Patson Daka starting as van Nistelrooy throws curveball

Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken a bold approach to correcting Leicester City’s form and changed formation at Chelsea.

Having stuck to the same set-up throughout his tenure, the manager has now opted to switch to a 5-2-1-2 shape, similar to the one City played during their triumphant FA Cup run.

The change of system sees three new personnel included. Conor Coady, Luke Thomas and Patson Daka are the trio to come in, with Jannik Vestergaard, Facundo Buonanotte and Bobby De Cordova-Reid dropping out.

In defence, it looks like Coady will be at the heart of the back five with Wout Faes and Victor Kristiansen either side, and then with James Justin and Thomas as wing-backs.

However, it could be Thomas in a central role, with Kristiansen bombing up and down the left flank.

In front of the defence, Boubakary Soumare keeps his place alongside Wilfred Ndidi, despite a poor showing at West Ham.

Then it’s Bilal El Khannouss in the attacking midfield slot, behind a front two of Daka and Jamie Vardy.

It’s just the third time that Vardy and Daka have started together and the first time since the victory over Wolves under Dean Smith when City were last in a relegation battle.

On the bench, Ricardo Pereira is in a squad under van Nistelrooy for the first time after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Woyo Coulibaly is also included, but there’s no space in the team for Vestergaard nor midfielder Oli Skipp.

City (5-2-1-2): Hermansen; Justin, Faes, Coady, Kristiansen, Thomas; Ndidi, Soumare; El Khannouss; Vardy, Daka.

Subs: Stolarczyk, Ricardo, Coulibaly, Okoli, Winks, Buonanotte, Mavididi, De Cordova-Reid, Ayew.
