Breaking: Premier League forced to make Chelsea statement after penalty drama vs Leicester City

The Premier League have released a statement after Chelsea's appeal for a first-half penalty against Leicester City were waved away.

It comes after Cole Palmer went down inside the box after a challenge from Leicester's Luke Thomas. Chelsea were adamant Palmer was fouled but referee Tim Robinson waved it away. A VAR check also confirmed the initial decision of no penalty.

And the Premier League's Match Centre social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter, have now released a statement. The account is regularly used to explain certain refereeing decisions during games.

"The referee’s call of no penalty to Chelsea following a challenge by Thomas on Palmer was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact deemed to be minimal," the statement said.

Enzo Maresca's side were awarded a penalty moments later against the Foxes after Victor Kristiansen brought down Jadon Sancho inside the box. But Palmer's effort from 12 yards was saved by Chelsea-linked goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

The Blues will be under pressure to secure all three points against Ruud van Nistelrooy's struggling Leicester team. The East Midlands club have lost 11 of their last 12 league matches and remain rooted in the bottom three.

Chelsea currently sit fourth in the top-flight table as they chase Champions League football under Maresca. The Blues will also know that fifth is likely to be good enough to qualify for Europe's elite competition.

English clubs have been performing well in Europe this term which will strengthen their position in the UEFA coefficient to get an extra Champions League spot for the 2025/25 season.
