Match Report: City too strong for Villa in quarter-finals

Manchester City hosted Aston Villa in the Women’s FA Cup quarter-final. The opening of the game was quite slow. City was in control but unable to capitalise on their chances. City in control in the opening stages

Manchester City was in possession throughout the beginning of the match. Bunny Shaw and Miedema had a few opportunities but nothing that forced D’Angelo to make big saves. The goalkeeper did stay on her toes and took the edge off some good crosses.

Aston Villa saw little of the ball in the first 30 minutes. Ebony Salmon and Paula Tomás were the only ones that got into the box but either Yamashita or the defence were there to pick it up.

Who will break the deadlock?

It was all Manchester City until Aleixandri lost the ball to Nunes in the back while trying to clear it. Ebony Salmon picked it up and raced towards Yamashita. Her shot was very powerful but the goalkeeper stopped it spectacularly.

Goalless at the break

Nearly ten minutes into the second half: Bunny Shaw was not going to miss another chance as Fowler send her through the defence. She kept her cool when facing D’Angelo and slides it through her legs – opening the score for Manchester City.

As we got closer to the one-hour mark you could see the Aston Villa bench warming up. Natalia Arroyo’s side has been doing well so far but it’s win or go home in the Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals.

First substitutions enters the pitch

Aston Villa was down 1-0 when Natalia Arroyo made the following change:

Rachel Daly on for Katie Robinson.

In the meantime Manchester City double their lead. A throw in to Miri Taylor goes wrong when Miedema takes the ball off her. She passes to Jess Park who is free in the box and slots it home.

After conceding the second goal Gabi Nunes and Saray Mayling were taken off for Noelle Maritz and Kirsty Hanson.

D’Angelo keeps Aston Villa in the game

Manchester City launch their next attack when Ouahabi finds Miedema down the left. Her pass finds Jess Park but her effort is blocked by Tomás. It turns into a bit of a scramble next as Bunny Shaw picks it ups but Baijings blocks her. Finally, Jess Park gets another opportunity but D’Angelo makes a brilliant save.

Gareth Taylor takes goalscorer Shaw off

Kerolin replaces her with ten more minutes of official time left. On the other side Jordan Nobbs and Missy Bo Kearns enter the pitch for Baijings and Miri Taylor. Naomi Layzell and Laura Blindkilde Brown also get some minutes. Miedema and Grace Prior made way.

Manchester City go to Women’s FA Cup Semi-Final

Laura Wienroither made an appearance as she came on for Casparij.

Ebony Salmon has been a nuisance for the City defence throughout the entire game. In stoppage time she sent her cross over Yamashita to Rachel Daly at the far post. The header went wide.

Even though Aston Villa had a good spell in the final five minutes it ended in 2-0 for Manchester City. They progress to the semi-finals.
