Premier League release statement on controversial Chelsea vs Leicester City decision

The Premier League has issued a clarification regarding the decision not to award Chelsea a penalty in the first half of their match against Leicester City.

Cole Palmer's appeals for a spot-kick were dismissed by referee Tim Robinson following a tackle by City's Luke Thomas within the penalty area.

Although Chelsea players were convinced it was a foul, both the on-field decision and the VAR check affirmed that no penalty should be given.

Explaining the rationale behind this incident, the Premier League's official Match Centre account on X, formerly Twitter, posted a statement.

This platform is often utilised to shed light on specific in-game refereeing decisions.

"The referee's call of no penalty to Chelsea following a challenge by Thomas on Palmer was checked and confirmed by VAR with the contact deemed to be minimal," read the Premier League's explanation.

Later in the game, Chelsea received a penalty when Victor Kristiansen fouled Jadon Sancho.

However, Palmer couldn't convert from the spot, his shot stopped by goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea.

With Ruud van Nistelrooy's Leicester side struggling this season, having lost 11 of their past 12 league games and languishing in the relegation zone, Chelsea will have been eager to capitalise on their struggles.

But at the time of writing, City are holding Chelsea to a 0-0 draw.

City had hit the bar in the first half after Hermansen's penalty save, with Van Nistelrooy's side holding their own against their opposition.
