David Ornstein sheds light on Alexander Isak links to Liverpool and Arsenal

Liverpool’s reported interest in Alexander Isak has been reiterated, but Newcastle remain firm in their stance that their top scorer is not for sale.

[The Athletic’s David Ornstein](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6180667/2025/03/06/liverpool-alexander-isak-arsenal-striker-transfers/) addressed the speculation in response to a fan question, making it clear that while multiple clubs admire Isak, Newcastle are in control of the situation.

“Newcastle have no intention of selling their best player and, understandably, don’t welcome this kind of conversation,” Ornstein said.

Ornstein stated that Isak is on Liverpool’s radar, alongside interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona. However, he emphasized that Newcastle have no intention of selling.

With more than three years remaining on his contract, no financial pressure to offload key players, and the club’s ambition to build around him, there is no active discussion of an exit.

“Isak has more than three years left on his existing contract, he is very well paid, and there’s no financial requirement for the St James’ Park hierarchy to cash in,” Ornstein said.

The insider acknowledged that every player has a price, and while Newcastle have not explicitly set one for Isak, figures of around £150 million have circulated in football circles. A bid of that size could open discussions, but as it stands, Newcastle hold the leverage.

“Liverpool are only going to consider making a move if Isak is genuinely available,” Ornstein said, “they’re not the type of club to engage in a wild goose chase.

“But I do think (sorry to say this, Newcastle fans) his future will be one of the big talking points heading into and during the summer transfer window.”

For now, Newcastle remain convinced they’ll keep Isak in tow and as a key part of their long-term project, with any potential suitors needing to pony up a massive amount of money to snatch him from Tyneside.
