Pittsburgh Steelers could have this new quarterback target, insider says

The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation remains up in the air as Justin Fields is set to test the open market. With that in mind, the team could immediately pivot to Russell Wilson, but they might also explore what Option C is for them.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated threw out a new scenario for the Steelers. Instead of going after either quarterback they have now, could Daniel Jones make sense? With Sam Darnold likely too rich for their blood, it at least seems possible.

"If Pittsburgh hangs on to Fields, it’s hard to figure where Russell Wilson lands. And even in the scenario where Fields departs, and the Steelers can’t upset the apple cart with Darnold (I think that’ll be too rich for their blood), I could see Pittsburgh kicking the tires on Jones before going back down the road they traveled last year," Breer said.

Jones spent last season’s second half as the backup on the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have an interest in bringing Jones back to be the competition for the returning J.J. McCarthy, but if the Steelers can offer him a clearer path to a starting role, he might take that job instead.

Either way, Jones is a viable third option, especially if the Steelers choose to leave Wilson. In an ideal world, the Steelers bring Fields back, and that is all there is to it. However, it appears he will hit the open market, and that could leave the Steelers' Qb situation in limbo.
