Ratings: Getafe shock Atlético and deal Simeone’s men a huge blow in the title race

In their second of three consecutive Madrid derbies, Diego Simeone and his men traveled away from home to take on a Getafe side fighting for an unlikely European berth. Despite upcoming matches against Real Madrid and Barcelona, the gaffer opened the match with minimal changes to the lineup. A dull first half turned into an action-packed second 45 that saw a penalty, a sending off, and stoppage-time goals.

Here’s how each player performed:

Oblak

Getafe’s attack capitalized on Atlético Madrid’s many mistakes in open play, and the hosts made the most of their free kick late in the second half to beat the Colchoneros for the first time since 2011. The man between the sticks couldn’t do much against Mauro Arambarri, who was able to run freely onto goal to equalize in the 88th minute. Oblak conceded to him again minutes later, as the midfielder deflected the ball past the keeper. 4

Molina

Coba da Costa caused significant trouble for the defender down the right, frequently getting the better of him with ease. Offensively, Molina was an inconsistent option out wide. The defender will look to bounce back from this tough match. 3.5

Giménez

Clément Lenglet was named in Atlético Madrid’s initial 11 as Diego Simeone sought to “protect” Giménez from picking up a yellow card that would rule him out of next weekend’s home game against FC Barcelona, but Lenglet suffered an injury while warming up and so Giménez had to play. Enjoyed a physical battle against Real Madrid loanee Álvaro Rodríguez, keeping the attacker at bay while he was on the pitch. 5.5

Le Normand

Picked up a needless yellow after pushing Arambarri while waiting for a Getafe free kick. Did just enough to cause trouble in the box late in the second half, leading to Omar Alderete’s handball and the team’s penalty. Later kept everybody onside for Arambarri’s winner. 4.5

Galán

Christantus Uche and company targeted Galán down the left flank, causing problems for the defender — he gave away more than one needless foul outside the box. The Spaniard will walk away with a sour taste in his mouth. 3.5

De Paul

Picked up a knock to his knee or the side of his left leg early on in the match, but gingerly walked it off and continued to play. De Paul’s searching balls from the middle of the pitch were quickly stopped by Getafe’s defense. The Argentine was taken off for Pablo Barrios at halftime to save the midfielder’s legs and try and insert more control. 5

Llorente

Started in the midfield and added some needed energy in a very dull first half. Was moved to a defensive role later in the second half, once again presenting his versatility to the team. He lost out in an individual duel with Arambarri as the Getafe midfielder equalized. 5.5

Giuliano Simeone

Although you won’t find Giuliano’s name on the scoresheet, the winger quietly had a strong performance on both ends of the ball. His six tackles and four clearances helped to win back possession, and his dribbling forward provided some much-needed attacking impetus in the first half. 6.5

Lino

Even though the Brazilian looked to make sporadic runs forward, the opposition closed in on him with speed, forcing the winger to drop backward and eliminating any danger he could have brought on the flank. The team’s slow build-up play did not help Lino’s case. He was taken off for Ángel Correa at halftime. 4

Griezmann

Another tame performance for the Frenchman, whose form continues to decline. 4

Alvarez

Almost nonexistent, deprived of service and removed before the hour for Alexander Sørloth. 4

Barrios (46’)

Replaced de Paul at the start of the second half. Looked busy but had little impact. Has a lot of growing to do. 5

Correa (46’)

The attacker’s initial yellow card for his silly foul on Djené was upgraded to a red after a VAR check. This moment proved to be a game-changing mistake, as just after Getafe scored both of their goals. 2

Sørloth (58’)

Calmly converted from the penalty spot in the 75th minute, bringing his LaLiga goal tally to 10. His celebrations were cut short though after Getafe launched a successful comeback. 7

Lemar (66’)

In a rare cameo, Lemar’s well-placed free kick that led to Sørloth’s penalty will be overshadowed by his lackluster marking on Arambarri in the 88th minute. 3.5

Gallagher (69’)

Replaced Griezmann to add fresh legs and more energy. Didn’t pressure the ball enough on Getafe’s free kick, giving them time to loft the ball into the box. 5
