Buffalo Bills release pass-rusher Von Miller ahead of free agency

One day after giving pass rusher Greg Rousseau a four-year, $80 million extension, the [Buffalo Bills](https://www.syracuse.com/buffalo-bills/) are parting ways with a different pass-rusher.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Sunday that the Bills were releasing veteran Von Miller. Miller was set to have a base salary of $17.1 million in 2025. Releasing Miller will save the team $8.3 million in cap space.

The news should not come as a surprise to anyone who follows the Bills. Miller, soon-to-be 36, was brought in ahead of the 2022 season on a six-year, $120 million deal. Brandon Beane and the Bills viewed Miller as the missing piece to a Super Bowl title.

Miller was living up to the contract in his first season logging eight sacks in 11 games. The veteran’s year would end on Thanksgiving Day when the pass-rusher suffered a knee injury.

Miller worked hard at rehabbing the injury and appeared in 12 games in 2023. Despite being healthy enough to play, it was apparent that Miller was not close to 100 percent. He recorded no sacks and just three quarterback hits that season. The veteran showed flashes of his old self in 2024 with six sacks, but his best days as a pass-rusher are behind him.

Miller had hoped to win a third Super Bowl with his third team in Buffalo, but the Bills were never able to get over the hump. The veteran could latch on to a Super Bowl contender elsewhere or rejoin the Bills. It was reported that both sides are open to a return.
