“I’d Make that Deal;” Green Bay Packers Fans React to Preferred Trade Target Asking Price Drop

It is no secret that the Green Bay Packers are in the market for a wide receiver this offseason. Whether they sign one in free agency or make a trade has yet to be determined, but the fact of the matter is that the wide receiver room in Green Bay woefully underperformed in 2024. What is more, the most sure-handed pass catcher of the group, Christian Watson, will be out for most of next season as he recovers from a torn ACL.

Of course, Davante Adams is the emotional and popular choice among fans for the Packers to target. The six-time Pro Bowler, who played for Green Bay from 2014-2021, was recently released by the New York Jets and is now a free agent. However, there are a plethora of other teams that are rumored to be in the market for his services.

Another popular name has been that of Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf, who has formerly requested a trade away from the team.

At First, the Asking Price for DK Metcalf Was too High for the Green Bay Packers

When news first broke that Metcalf had requested a trade away from Seattle, it was also revealed that the Seahawks wanted a first and third round pick in return for him. Needless to say, no one expected the Packers to be willing to make that trade.

Many fans threw out the idea that perhaps Green Bay could still make a trade, though, by offering Romeo Doubs and a third round pick for the two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver.

But a recent transaction made by the Seahawks themselves may have hurt their negotiations with other teams. Over the weekend, they traded their Pro Bowl quarterback, Geno Smith, to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third round pick.

As wide receivers are not seen as being as valuable as quarterbacks, their own trade made their demand for Metcalf unreasonable.

Earlier this morning, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that Seattle has lowered to their asking price to a second-round pick. However, she also stated that Metcalf wants to be paid $30+ million a year on his next contract as his expires at the end of the 2025 season.

Many Packers fans do not seem to be worried about that price tag, though:

If they could get a 2nd they wouldn’t have to be asking 🤷🏻‍♂️ https://t.co/a2tWjkUhII

And While Russini notes that Metcalf wants to play in a warm climate, Packers insider Bill Huber reports that he was told that this specific demand was not necessarily a huge factor for the two-time Pro Bowler:

Was told the weather isn’t an issue (hence the punny headline here: https://t.co/l1nrh4QLOv). Picking toward the end of Round 2, they might have to give up something more. https://t.co/dM8GtGe0PN

The biggest question, though, is whether or not the Packers will want to dish out $30 million a year for a wide receiver. At some point, they are going to have to, judging by how the NFL market for wide receivers is going.
