Well, it was fun while it lasted. Deep down, we knew the Philadelphia Eagles would never acquire Myles Garrett, but how could we not talk about the chances? Come on. IT'S MYLES GARRETT.
We're talking about a generational talent who said he would have no issues playing here. It's statements like those that birth football fantasies about Philly's roster even if we know that smoke very rarely leads to any real fires.
We already knew the drill. Typically, when an all-world talent says he's disgruntled and wants out of his current deal, we can't help but think of the genius of Howie Roseman. If anyone could make this happen, it's Howie. That's what we tell ourselves.
We do so for good reason, because Howie has been known to make the impossible possible.
It just wasn't meant to be this time.
Myles Garrett signs a massive extension to stay with the Browns, ending all hope of a trade involving the Eagles.
It doesn't take long for the word to get out among NFL circles and the Eagles contingent, but just in case you missed the announcement, Myles is staying put in Cleveland.
From trade to truce and beyond: the Browns and Myles Garrett reached agreement today on a record contract extension that averages $40 million per year and includes $123.5 million in guaranteed money and now makes him the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history, sources tell ESPN.… pic.twitter.com/scNWJH2vFX

As Adam Schefter reports, this deal makes the four-time First-Team All-Pro the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history. This won't quench his thirst for winning as we believe the Cleveland Browns are cursed, but, hey, what do you do? At least he can drown his sorrows in quite a bit of cash.
So, now we revisit statements we made earlier in the offseason. What might the plan be for the Eagles at edge rusher? Bryce Huff may not become the player we hoped he would. Brandon Graham might retire. Josh Sweat figures to leave in free agency.
Garrett would have been a nice offseason prize, but there's the other thing. He also would have been expensive, and Philly also needs to think about paying some of their young stars like Cam Jurgens, Jordan Davis, and Jalen Carter pretty soon.
So, we move on. Free agency's 'tampering period begins on Monday, March 10. The new league year begins two days later at 4 p.m. EST. We'll see what the Birds do (if they do anything). This ought to be fun to watch,
