After requesting trade, Cleveland Browns make Myles Garrett highest-paid non-quarterback…

Months after requesting a trade and stating his desire to win, Myles Garrett agreed to stay in where winning has been hard to come by.

The Browns and the defensive end agreed to a massive contract extension that includes $123.5 million in guaranteed money and averages $40 million per year, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday.

The deal also includes a no-trade clause, per The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, who added the extension is for four years.

Garrett released a statement to NFL Network in January confirming he requested a trade.

“While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent,” he said. “The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.”

Garrett spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Browns and became a staple in their lineup. The 29-year-old has seven straight seasons with double-digit sacks and has at least 14 in four consecutive years.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry told reporters in January that he had no interest in trading Garrett and that they wanted to sign the defensive end to a long-term extension.

The Browns have made just two playoff appearances in Garrett’s tenure and finished 2024 with a 3-14 record. Despite an abysmal season for Cleveland, Garrett led the league with 22 tackles for loss.

Cleveland finished 2024 with a 3-14 record and lost quarterback Deshaun Watson to a torn Achilles in Week 7. He ruptured the same Achilles in January, putting his status in doubt for 2025.

While the Browns still have a lot of holes to fill, including quarterback, they have security on defense with Garrett locked up for the foreseeable future.
