Newcastle United are fighting for European football again this season as they remain firmly in the hunt for a Champions League place.

The Tyneside club currently sit ninth in the Premier League, but just a handful of points separate most of the top half of the table.

Although Eddie Howe’s side finished seventh in the top flight last season, that wasn’t enough to earn a place in Europe for this campaign.

Newcastle smashed their club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their overall turnover surged from £250million to £320million.

Their commercial revenue improved from £47million in 2022-23 to £86million last season following their lucrative deals with Sela, Noon and Adidas.

The north-east giants’ broadcast revenue rose from £165million to £184million, while their matchday income increased from £38million to £50million after featuring in the group stages of the Champions League.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Newcastle’s increase in matchday revenue over the past two years has been impressive, having risen by £22million from £28million in 2021-22.

Their losses before tax fell dramatically from £72million in 2022-23 to £11million last season, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

The club’s wage bill jumped from £187million to £219million in 2023-24 after signing Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall for more than £150million.

Newcastle land £20m boost after official documents filed

Borson revealed Newcastle’s revenue increased by around £20million more than most people expected last season.

He told Football Insider: “They continued to move the matchday revenue quite aggressively up.

“It’s nearly doubled over a two-year period.

“The £50million that they got from matchday was a Champions League season, so you had three Champions League home games in there.

“They are obviously big money spinners, but it’s still impressive to have moved it from £28million to £50million over two years.

“The overall £320million was probably a little bit higher than we’d imagined it was going to be.

“I think most people thought it was going to be around £300million, so £320million is great.”

Financial Year Newcastle Revenue

Newcastle could land £100m windfall after stunning twist

Borson previously told Football Insider Newcastle must generate more than £500million in revenue a season to compete at the top of the Premier League.

They remain significantly down on Manchester City’s numbers after the English champions posted a Premier League record revenue of £715million and a £413million wage bill for 2023-24.

Newcastle could land a £100million windfall if they qualify for the Champions League and compete well in the competition next season.
