Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah revealed that head coach Arne Slot scolded the senior team for their first-half performance against Southampton. The Egyptian scored two goals from the two separate penalties during the Premier League comeback 3-1 victory against the Saints.
The Reds conceded a first-half goal against the Saints, surprising the home crowd and failed to make a quick comeback. Slot deployed a vastly similar side to what he used against Paris Saint-Germain in last Wednesday’s Champions League first-leg bout.
The few changes that the Dutchman made involved Darwin Nunez, Curtis Jones, and Kostas Tsimikas replacing Diogo Jota, Alexis Mac Allister and Andy Robertson. However, after the Reds failed to score any goals, Slot made a few changes for the second-half of the game.
Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah praised head coach Arne Slot for giving an inspirational yet stern halftime team talk.
Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah praised head coach Arne Slot for giving an inspirational yet stern halftime team talk.
The Dutchman brought Harvey Elliott, Mac Allister and Robertson in for Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and Tsimikas during the halftime. Liverpool started their comeback with a goal from Darwin Nunez in the 51st minute, followed by Salah’s two penalty goals.
Speaking to the media (via Liverpoolfc.com), Salah highlighted the influence that the halftime team talk from Slot played for Liverpool. He said:
“A bit of frustration. The manager, his head, was like going for us – but that’s something you need sometimes. Because first half, the game was sloppy, we just were slow and taking our time and in the last minute they managed to [go ahead in] the game. But we are now more experienced, we can manage that situation and I’m glad that we did.”
Slot has received praise for making a smart assessment of the game and changing the situation with accurate substitution. From Diogo Jota’s goal against Nottingham Forest to Elliott’s goal against Paris Saint-Germain, his substitutes have changed many games.
