New D.K. Metcalf report could spell bad news for New England Patriots

The Patriots need a true No. 1 wide receiver this offseason. With D.K. Metcalf requesting a trade from the Seattle Seahawks, he’d certainly fill that void, but the latest report might spell bad news for New England.

Seattle’s asking price for Metcalf has come down from originally wanting a first-round pick as well as a third-round pick, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported on Sunday. The Seahawks are now “open to a return centered around a second-round pick.”

While the Patriots could swing that, Russini added that Metcalf “ideally wants to play in a warm weather climate.”

The Patriots are starting fresh for the second time in as many seasons. They haven’t made a big move yet under new coach Mike Vrabel, but that could change when free agency officially opens on March 12.

A rebuild will take time, but getting quarterback Drake Maye a true No. 1 weapon in an important Year 2 should be high on New England’s list — whether that’s Metcalf or someone else.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Metcalf is also reportedly seeking a contract of $30 million per year. Fitting him into the Patriots' roster financially wouldn’t be a problem, but if Metcalf prefers to play in a warm climate, New England might not be a desirable destination for him.
