'Quite often': Jadon Sancho explains why he wasn't surprised by Marc Cucurella's superb goal against Leicester

Jadon Sancho has been discussing his teammate Marc Cucurella following Chelsea’s 1-0 win against Leicester City.

With the score level at 0-0, Cucurella rifled one into the bottom corner in the 60th minute to give Chelsea the lead and all three points.

When Chelsea first signed him, Todd Boehly was quick to praise Cucurella, describing the 26-year-old as an “elite defender”.

His teammate Sancho has now had some positive words to say about him following his impressive strike.

Jadon Sancho has seen Marc Cucurella score Leicester goal in Chelsea training

While Chelsea supporters may have been surprised to have seen Cucurella score such an excellent goal against the Foxes, Sancho was not.

According to the winger, Cucurella does that all of the time in training. “It was a much-needed win, we knew Leicester would come here and give it their all,” Sancho started off saying via BBC Sport. “We stuck to the game plan and we got the three points.

“We had a lot of chances, we should have converted more goals. That’s football, you score some and you lose some. He [Cucurella] does that in training quite often so I’m not surprised. We want to win every game. Next two games; Copenhagen on Thursday and then Arsenal. We have to be prepared.”

In February, Cucurella spoke about Chelsea needing to be more clinical, and he was just that Sunday afternoon.

It was a different story for Cole Palmer, who missed a first-half penalty. It has now been seven Premier League fixtures since the attacking midfielder’s last goal.

After everything that he has done since joining the club, though, he deserves a bit of leeway.

Marc Cucurella becoming a goalscoring full-back

Last season, Cucurella scored just one goal in 26 appearances. The campaign before that, the defender failed to net at all in 33 outings.

This term, however, Cucurella has managed to score five goals, including that winner against Leicester, which could end up being very important in the race for Champions League football.

Enzo Maresca has transformed Cucurella. He has become an inverted full-back capable of scoring goals.

The Spain international can be another attacking threat for Chelsea, especially when their offensive players are not at the top of their game like Palmer right now.

Cucurella will also have to be defensively solid in Chelsea’s next top-flight game, though, with the Blues taking on London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates. If Maresca’s men can win that, they can send out a real message to the other contenders for Champions League football.
