While Gillars had a soothing voice on the radio, she taunted US troops fighting in Europe about the fidelity of their wives and girlfriends back at home.
She became a hate figure among American GIs, earning the nicknames "Axis Sally" and even "Berlin Bitch".
Following Germany's defeat in May, 1945, Gillars attempted to escape by posing as a refugee but was arrested by the US military.
At her later trial she was sentenced to 10 to 30 years in prison. She was paroled in 1961.
