Manchester United are unlikely to lose academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, as the club have an option to extend his contract until 2028.
Kobbie Mainoo’s future has become a massive talking point in recent weeks. Contract renewal talks haven’t gone as planned, and there is interest in his services from a rival club. However, Manchester United have no reason to panic, as they hold an option to extend his stay. According to a report from The Sun, the club can activate this clause to keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2028.
Mainoo has had an exceptional rise at United. After coming up the ranks at the club at some pace, he got promoted to their first team at the start of 2023, and the teenager hasn’t looked back since. Not only has he established himself as a key member of their team, but he has also broken into the England national team.
While his performances on the pitch have been top-notch, his contract situation has been the talk of the town. His current deal runs out in the summer of 2027, and multiple reports have suggested that Ruben Amorim could end up being pressured to cash in on him in the near future.
Chelsea are keeping a close eye on his situation. The Blues are constantly on the lookout for young players with massive potential, and he certainly fits the bill. They will pounce on any opportunity to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
United have a clause in Mainoo’s contract
While the London club would love to add him to their midfield ahead of next season, United don’t need to be in any rush to cash in on their teenage sensation. United have an option to extend his stay by another 12 months. They could trigger the clause and extend his stay until 2028 to give them more control over his short-term future.
Generally, players do have a say on such an extension. But in this case, it is a club-only option, so Mainoo doesn’t have a say in it. While United do not need to worry about his immediate future, they are still hoping that they could tie him down to a new long-term deal, as Amorim considers him a key part of their plans.
Meanwhile, his agents are pushing for a massive new deal as they want to ensure their client, who is currently earning £20,000-a-week gets the raise that he deserves.
