53-year-old set to finalise move to Arsenal next week

Former Atlético Madrid chief Andrea Berta is set to sign a contract as Arsenal’s new sporting director next week.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Andrea Berta is all set to be the new Arsenal sporting director. The Italian will sign his contract with the North London club next week before officially taking charge of their project.

The Gunners have been on the lookout for a new director for some time now, and they are finally closing in on the appointment of Edu Gaspar’s replacement. The Brazilian was a key figure in Arsenal’s new project since the start.

He took charge as their technical director back in 2019 before getting promoted to the role of sporting director in 2022. Edu and Mikel Arteta successfully managed to revive the club and re-establish themselves as one of the giants in English football.

After a spell of over five years, he parted ways with the club towards the end of 2024. Given the kind of foundation he has laid, the Gunners wanted to ensure they brought in the right man to take it forward.

As a result, they were involved in talks with quite a few big names from across Europe. Andrea Berta was one of their names on the shortlist because of all that he had done at Atletico Madrid.

The Italian was a part of the Spanish club for almost 12 years, and during his time at the club, he ensured they were always competing with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Not only did he ensure their success on the pitch, but his work in the transfer market also received a lot of plaudits.

Berta to be Arsenal’s new chief

He left Atletico at the start of the year and has been looking for a new opportunity ever since. The Gunners recently approached him after shortlisting him as one of their top candidates. Berta has given the North London club total priority since the start. If reports are to be believed, he even turned down talks with an Italian club.

The talks have been going on for a while, and multiple bids have been rejected, but in the end, the Gunners have reached an agreement with him to be their new sporting director. All documents are in place, and the deal should be sealed this week. Meanwhile, Berta will be signing his contract as their new chief next week.
