Green Bay Packers: NFL Insider Does Not Believe Team Will Trade for 2x Pro Bowler

The Green Bay Packers will be adding to their wide receiver room this offseason. Whether it be by trade, free agency, or the NFL Draft (or a combination of the three) remains to be seen. Christian Watson is going to miss most of the 2025 season due to suffering a torn ACL in Green Bay’s Week 18 loss to the Chicago Bears. Additionally, the Packers’ other three top receivers all struggled with drops.

Over the course of the offseason, there have quite a few veteran wide receivers linked to Green Bay, whether it be by fans, analysts, or the players themselves. One name that has been tossed around a great deal lately is that of Seattle Seahawks two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf, who has recently requested a trade.

Early in the offseason, Metcalf’s name became a popular one among Packers fans when contemplating what veteran wide receiver the team could target via trade. However, when it was reported that Seattle was asking for a first and third round pick in return for the two-time Pro Bowler, many gave up hope of acquiring him.

But after the Seahawks unloaded their two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Geno Smith, to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third round pick, it became crystal clear that they would not get anything near their asking price for Metcalf.

As a result, Seattle has reportedly lowered their asking price to a second round pick. This, many fans believe, is a price Green Bay would be willing to pay.

Despite the lowered asking price, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell does not think that the Packers will be willing to give up the draft capital necessary to land Metcalf in a trade. He recently wrote:

“A Metcalf move would be entirely out of character for Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst. In six seasons, the only times he has traded picks for veteran players have been moving Day 3 picks for Corey Bojorquez, Malik Willis and Randall Cobb. The Packers hold on to their premium picks, and Gutekunst places more of a priority on young talent than any other general manager.

“(Note that his big free agent signings last offseason, Jacobs and Xavier McKinney, were in their age-26 seasons.) Metcalf isn’t old, but Green Bay would be giving up valuable picks and paying out a significant deal for a player as he approaches 30. That doesn’t seem in line with how the organization philosophically approaches its roster, but maybe Gutekunst feels the need to take a big swing.”

As Barnwell notes, Gutekunst does not have a track record for trading away high draft picks for players. One aspect, too, that is not being considered by many is that Metcalf wants a $30 million per year contract extension from whatever team he goes to.

The Packers may not be willing to pay that.
