Dean Henderson eyes England starting spot ahead of Thomas Tuchel's first camp

New Three Lions boss Tuchel has attended Palace’s past two league matches with a keen eye on Henderson alongside Marc Guehi, Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze.

Impressing against Ipswich on Saturday, Henderson kept his ninth clean sheet of the season after making seven saves and preventing 1.9 expected goals. Only Arsenal's David Raya (10) and Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels (12) have kept more clean sheets this season.

However, he faces a tough challenge to unseat Pickford, who made the England number one spot his own under Gareth Southgate, earning 73 caps and keeping 35 clean sheets.

The Palace shot-stopper made his first England start last October under interim boss Lee Carsley, helping secure a 3-1 Nations League victory over Finland.

Despite his limited international minutes, the 27-year-old has been included in four consecutive Three Lions squads as the de facto number two, travelling to last summer’s European Championships as Jordan Pickford’s understudy.

After dazzling in the Premier League, Tuchel’s opening bow as England boss presents a fresh slate with Henderson hoping to usurp stalwart Pickford.

Speaking after Palace’s victory over Ipswich on Saturday, Henderson revealed his aim to start for England in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia at Wembley.

“

I’ve spoken to him \[Tuchel\],” Henderson revealed. “He sent a text before the game. He said he’d be at the game to watch and wished me all the best, alongside Adam, Marc and Ebs. It’s nice to know he’s watching.

“

I’d love to play for England this time around. I’d love to get a cap at another camp – I’m chasing that; it’s one of my goals. During the international break, you go away with your country and hopefully get rewarded with a cap.

“But all I can control is my job for the team, playing how the manager wants me to play and showing up in big moments, which I’ve been doing.

“I’m really enjoying it. It’s the best football I’ve played in the last couple of years as I haven’t played a lot. I’m delighted and in autopilot now – I’ve just got to keep going from strength to strength.”
