Mary Fowler makes stunning return after Matildas disappointment as teammate cops shock axing

Mary Fowler has continued her stunning form for Man City in England having picked up player-of-the-match honours, while Matildas teammate Teagan Micah was dropped from Liverpool's starting XI. Fowler was recently named the best player in February in the WPL and the Matildas star continued her classy form in the Women's FA Cup having produced the incisive pass for the first goal against Aston Villa.

Fowler found Khadija Shaw in the first half with the Jamaican forward unable to convert the brilliant chance. However, Shaw was on point when given a similar opportunity later in the game by Fowler.

The Aussie delivered a lovely pass from the left side of the field and took two defenders out of play. Shaw was put through on goal and slotted the ball home in the 53rd minute to give City the lead. Fowler and Shaw have been quite the duo so far this season with Fowler's ability to find the forward a huge reason behind City's title challenge.

Jess Park eventually sealed the game with City's second goal as they advanced to the semi-final of the Women's FA Cup. Fowler has struggled to repeat her City performances for the Matildas in recent times with Australia struggling in the SheBelieves Cup. Australia lost all three games with the nation falling to their equal-lowest FIFA ranking.

But the Aussie continues to impress in England with many feeling her form will soon translate to the green and gold jersey. City will now wait to find out who they will take on, but it was not all good news for her Matildas teammates with Arsenal knocked out of the competition with Micah also losing her position in goal for Liverpool.

Teagan Micah dropped in Liverpool win

Unfortunately for Arsenal's Aussie trio - Steph Catley, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Caitlin Foord - Liverpool were too strong for the north London side in their quarter-final clash. All three started the game against Liverpool, but were eliminated from the competition after a 1-0 defeat.

Catley produced the best chance for Arsenal with her shot missing narrowly wide. Unfortunately, Liverpool's winner was a bizarre goal after Sophie Roman Haug's shot hit the post. The ball then deflected into the back of diving goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar and found its way into the net.

And while Micah would have been thrilled to see her side advance to the semi-final, she would have been disappointed to have lost her starting position. Micah was dropped from Liverpool's starting XI and might find it hard to get back into the team with goalkeeper Rachael Laws producing a fine display to keep Arsenal scoreless.

This was only the second time this season Arsenal have not scored in a game and Laws' performance might have been enough to see Micah remain on the bench for a little longer. The Matildas goalkeeper will feel unfortunate to lose her position in between the posts, but should still feature for the national side going forward. Micah was strong for the Matildas in their recent game against Colombia and will take confidence out of her recent performances.

Meanwhile, Sam Kerr's return was delayed another game with the Matildas forward on the comeback trail from her ACL injury. Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 to keep their unbeaten run of 27 games alive. Chelsea have won 25 in 27 games and drawn twice this season. They are still in contention to win a historic quadruple with the WPL, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League all to play for in 2025. Kerr's return to football will also be a major lift for the side.
