The Pittsburgh Steelers made a massive investment in their offense on Sunday, trading for star wide receiver DK Metcalf and giving him a big financial commitment.
Now the team only needs someone to throw Metcalf the ball.
The Steelers landed Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, sending a 2025 second-round draft pick and giving Metcalf a four-year, $132 million contract extension.
The Steelers face an uncertain future at quarterback as both of last year's starters -- Justin Fields and Russell Wilson -- are headed to free agency. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that the Steelers are expected to make an offer to free agent Sam Darnold, though she added that Darnold is widely expected to join the Seattle Seahawks.
Some analysts believe the Steelers will instead make a bid for veteran Aaron Rodgers, who was cut loose after two disappointing seasons with the New York Jets.
"Steelers kinda have no choice but to throw themselves at Aaron Rodgers. It won't work but they have to try it anyway," noted reporter Glenn Clark in a post on X.
Reporter Kris Pursiainen also suggested the Steelers may become the frontrunner for Rodgers after adding Metcalf to the roster.
"WOW!! DK to the Pittsburgh Steelers is a MOVE," Pursiainen wrote on X. "George Pickens is awesome. But not awesome enough to be the only playmaker on the offense. This should help him a great deal. Did the Steelers just become the Aaron Rodgers team?"
The Steelers would have plenty of competition if they planned to go after Rodgers. Russini reported that the Seahawks are also expected to talk to Rodgers about their vacancy.
