Green Bay Packers fans hoped for their team to make a splashy move at wide receiver in free agency.
A reunion with Davante Adams or a blockbuster deal for DK Metcalf were bandied about on social media the entire week approaching free agency.
To the chagrin of Green Bay, Adams found his new home, inking a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams; while the Seattle Seahawks dealt Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It was mildly disappointing news the Packers missed on the two receivers.
However, according to Jason Wilde, the team didn't miss -- they never even aimed at the top two targets available.
"A source close to Adams said last month that the 32-year-old three-time first-team All Pro was "open" to returning to the Packers, but it turns out his former team wasn't interested in bringing him back," Wilde wrote.
"Asked how much conversation there had been between the Packers, and Adams and longtime agent Frank Bauer, one source replied, 'None. None,' " he added. "That was also the case, both sources said, with Metcalf."
There are still ample options for the Green Bay Packers to pursue in Green Bay, but they appear to be more spendthrift about improving the position.
Cooper Kupp is expected to be released with the addition of Adams. Chris Godwin, Stefon Diggs and Amari Cooper are also pending free agents. However, none of the aforementioned are quite in their prime as Adams and Metcalf.
A reunion with Adams would have been storybook. The former second-round pick is the last Packers receiver to earn Pro Bowl honors before his departure in 2022 and has maintained a high-level of play into his 30s. Between the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets last season, Adams surpassed 1,000 yards receiving for a sixth straight year -- a performance that warranted the Rams to offer a two-year, $46 million contract.
Despite Adams' consistency, Metcalf was the crown jewel of this offseason.
The Steelers shelled out a massive five-year, $150 million deal and had to give up a 2025 second-round pick to land Metcalf, who was reported to want to join a "warm-weather team."
Metcalf proved costly to acquire, and time will tell whether the Packers made the right move on passing.
Green Bay can still explore free agency for a veteran receiver and will likely need to draft at the position as well with Christian Watson expected to miss the first half of the season while recovering from an ACL injury.
