West Ham are looking up in the Premier League ahead of their Monday Night Football showdown against Newcastle.

The Hammers have endured a somewhat turbulent campaign, as former boss Julen Lopetegui was sacked on 8 January, just four days on from a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Graham Potter lost his first game, when his side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa despite taking a ninth minute lead through Lucas Paqueta, who could be facing a lifetime ban from football amid betting charges.

Things have slowly started to improve though, with consecutive wins over Arsenal and Leicester easing any fears of a rare relegation battle.

West Ham have enjoyed success in recent years, and clinched the UEFA Conference League title in 2023 thanks to a 2-1 win over Italian outfit Fiorentina.

Just last season, the Hammers finished in the top-half of the Premier League table, securing ninth spot under David Moyes.

However, such exploits seem beyond the reach of Potter’s side now, who are 16th, which has been brought into question by Andy Gray and Richard Keys.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS following Manchester United’s draw with Arsenal on Sunday 9 March, Gray said: “When you’ve got Tottenham, Manchester United, Everton and West Ham, four teams there.”

Keys added: “That you would expect to see sixth to eighth.”

West Ham need to have a strong summer transfer window

The thoughts of West Ham supporters may echo that of Gray and Keys, as in recent seasons the Hammers have been able to finish in the upper echelons of the Premier League table.

Even though they sit just 16th, the East London outfit are 16 points clear of the relegation zone with 11 games left to play, so the Irons can already think about preparing for next season.

The 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons witnessed West Ham finish sixth and seventh in the Premier League respectively, before they then went on to win their first European trophy in 2023.

That is the sort of success that the Hammers faithful have become accustomed to seeing in recent seasons, so it is fair to say that the supporters will be unhappy with their current league position.

To turn things around ahead of next season, Potter must enjoy a successful summer transfer window as he looks to build his squad at the London Stadium.

The wheels may already be turning in the right direction for West Ham in that regard too, amid their interest in Roma forward Tammy Abraham, who is currently on loan with fellow Serie A giants AC Milan.

All eyes are on David Sullivan and Daniel Kretinsky, they need to find a way to spend big again.
