EU Justice ministers: ‘Russia will be held accountable for war crimes’

On 7 March, EU Ministers of Justice discussed the fight against impunity for crimes committed in connection with the war in Ukraine. The Polish Presidency at the Council presented an overview of the various initiatives of the EU, its member states and international bodies in this respect.

Ministers looked at ways to best contribute to the work of the soon-to-be-established special tribunal under the auspices of the Council of Europe, in particular as regards the transfer of evidence collected by member states and preserved at Eurojust’s database.

Adam Bodnar, Polish Minister of Justice, said that the European Union had done a lot to gather and secure evidence of crimes committed by Russia.

“I trust this will be crucial in the works of the special tribunal that will be established soon. Justice will be served and Russia will be held accountable for the war crimes it has committed in Ukraine,” Bodnar said.
