Report: Why Liverpool will still be wearing Nike for part of 2025/26 despite new Adidas deal announcement

There was excitement amongst Liverpool fans on Monday morning as the Reds finally announced a new partnership with kit supplier Adidas.

Revealed as ‘the worst kept secret in football’, Liverpool have signed a ‘multi-year’ deal with the German sportswear giant.

Adidas have made some brilliant Liverpool kits over the years, with the last contract ending 13 years ago, in 2012.

The move means, of course, that the Reds will be waving goodbye to Nike, who have supplied them since 2020.

Nike kits have often split opinion amongst the Anfield faithful, although with Liverpool on course to win the Premier League in the American company’s final effort, their reputation may be enhanced over time.

In the meantime, though, it has emerged that Liverpool will actually have to put up with Nike for a little while longer than first anticipated.

Liverpool to wear Nike in pre-season

Liverpool and Adidas just fit together. With leaks already circulating of the kits for the 2025/26 season, there is tangible excitement amongst the fanbase.

The yearly release of three kits has by now become a tradition at every club the world over. It feels like a good way of waving the previous season goodbye and ringing in a new one.

With a new supplier ready to take a fresh look at Liverpool’s training gear, kits and every in between for 25/26, that feeling will be heightened at Anfield.

However, according to The Athletic, Liverpool fans will actually have to wait until August the 1st before seeing any of the new gear.

That’s because the Reds’ current deal with Nike runs until July 31st. With pre-season scheduled to commence in early July, that will leave almost a month of playing and training in the old kits.

Liverpool’s contract with Nike was initially scheduled to start in June 2020, ending five years later. But due to the season finishing late because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the start – and end – date was pushed back.

Where are Liverpool going for pre-season?

This is a fascinating little nugget of information that has eked out. Most supporters would have preferred to see Adidas in right from day one of the new pre-season.

With Liverpool usually keen to get transfer business done early, it will likely mean that any new signings will be brought in and unveiled wearing the old kit.

To plenty, this is completely immaterial, and that’s fair enough. But it is always nice to see a shiny new signing donning a shiny new kit. Oh well.

Given the success Liverpool may go on to have in the current kit, perhaps it’s only fitting that it gets a lap of honour at the end of the campaign.

In the meantime, The Athletic report that it could be on show in Asia this July, with Liverpool in talks for a trip out to Japan and Hong Kong.
