The Manchester United fan group The 1958 have come out, addressing their “successful” protest this weekend at the club’s Premier League home fixture with Arsenal.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer were in attendance to see thousands of United fans march on Old Trafford in protest of the Glazer’s ownership of the club.

The 1958 announced the plan for the protest back in February, hitting out against the treatment towards the fans, especially in light of the most recent cost-cutting measures being implemented due to years of financial mismanagement at the club.

In their initial announcement, the group cited their protest in response to: “The treatment of fans from the club. The eradication of fan culture. The assault on concessions and generational fans. Putting profit before fan safety. Putting profit before everything. The total lack of communication and transparency. The uncertainty of our club’s future.”

At the start of the week, this was followed up with details of the protest for fans to join, rallying the supporters to show strength against the Glazer’s ownership.

Last night, after the protest marched from the Tollgate to Old Trafford, backed by thousands of fans, the supporters group announced their success on X.

The 1958 announce successful protest

Taking to X, announcing their success, The 1958 commented: “Today was a massive success and fans showed up in huge numbers. Young, old, families, supporter clubs, some fans [are] clearly struggling. All for the love of our club and to fight for everything we stand for.

“Worldwide media coverage turning the lens of greed back on our owners. Each one of you made a statement that we have had enough. We will not take it any longer.

“Many seem to think that a protest is a silver bullet. It is a war of attrition and the war to protect the best interests of our club, generational fans and football is underway. We have always said it’s a marathon not a sprint and it requires resolve, dedication and commitment.

“This will be more than protests at the ground and everyone will need to play their part. Everyone who took part today at the ground or online will be on the right side of history.

“Unified in solidarity under a single cause. Stay the course and support each other. Further updates will be released this week on what comes next. The 1958 .”

With reference of being a marathon and not a sprint, it’s unlikely this will be the last of the protests from the supporters group, with Joel Glazer recently commenting he has no intention of selling the club.
