Patriots trade DT Davon Godchaux to Saints ahead of free agency, per report

Less than two weeks after permitting him to seek a trade, the New England Patriots have indeed moved Davon Godchaux. The defensive tackle, who has been with the team since 2021, has been sent to the New Orleans Saints.

The Patriots are getting a seventh-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft in return for Godchaux, as first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

A Louisiana native who spent his college career at LSU, Godchaux first entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2017. He was picked up by the Patriots as part of their free agency spending spree four years later, making the cross-division move via a two-year, $15 million pact.

Godchaux later ended up signing contract extensions in July of 2022 and July of 2024. In total, he went on to appear in a combined 69 regular season and playoff games with 68 starts as a Patriot.

Primarily an early-down run stuffer, the 6-foot-3, 330-pounder registered 250 tackles and 2.5 sacks as well as one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one batted pass over his 2,662 defensive snaps. Of those, 679 came during the 2024 season, when he served his usual role along a New England defensive front missing Christian Barmore in all but four games because of a blood clots diagnosis.

While Barmore’s future remains unclear, Godchaux’s has now been decided. He will spend the final two years of his contract with his hometown team.
