In an era where elite footballers are often identified as prodigies and fast-tracked to the top level, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and his journey stands as a remarkable exception.
The Dutch defender, now widely regarded as one of the world’s finest, traveled a path marked by uncertainty, patience, and persistent development before reaching football’s summit.
Van Dijk’s professional career began at FC Groningen in 2011, though even this step wasn’t straightforward. Initially relegated to the under-23 squad rather than the first team, van Dijk’s determination became evident as he pushed for senior opportunities
On June 21, 2013, van Dijk signed with Celtic for approximately £2.6 million, a modest fee that gave little indication of his future value.
At 22 years old, while most elite defenders are starting to establish themselves at top clubs, van Dijk was only beginning his journey in a league often overlooked by major European scouts.
His time in Scotland proved transformative, as he helped Celtic secure two Scottish Premiership titles, one Scottish Cup, and one Scottish League Cup, while earning the Scottish Professional Football League Player of the Year award in the 2014-15 season
At 24 years old, he was finally making his Premier League debut for Southampton – an age when many top defenders have already established themselves at Champions League level clubs.
Of course, the rest of the story is history now, and it’s fair to say that it is some glorious history to say the least.
And to pay homage to his first club, Willem II in Holland, Virgil van Dijk has announced this week that he will reintroduce the club’s international youth tournament.
Taking to Instagram, the Reds skipper wrote:
“It’s official.”
“I’m proud to announce that along with Willem II, we’re bringing back the international youth tournament this September.”
“The world’s biggest clubs will arrive in Tilburg and play in the first ‘Virgil’s Legacy Trophy’ U13s tournament.”
“I feel strongly about inspiring others & want to give the next generation of players a proper platform to perform. The best pitches, facilities & officials.”

It adds further info on the Virgil’s Legacy Trophy:

“From the atmosphere on the pitch to the challenge of facing top academies from around the world, this tournament is about is about growth, passion and opportunity. Every player who steps onto the field will feel what it means to dream big, work hard, and believe in their future.”
