The Seahawks’ approach to free agency has dramatically shifted in the past five days.
Most notably, Seattle is expected to pursue the ranks of free-agent quarterbacks, with Sam Darnold expected to be their top target, following their shocking trade of Geno Smith.
The Seahawks’ trade of Smith will give them roughly $63 million in cap space, eighth or ninth in the NFL, according to OvertheCap.com.

After Geno Smith trade, here’s what’s next for Seahawks at QB | Analysis
The easy conclusion assessing the beginning of what already looks to be one of the maddest months of March in team history is that the Seahawks’ decision-makers have decided to rebuild.
How else to view cutting the second-leading receiver in team history in Tyler Lockett; learning their most dangerous remaining playmaker, DK Metcalf, wants to be dealt; and trading quarterback Geno Smith, all in the span of about 54 hours from Wednesday morning to Friday afternoon?
But it’s probably not the right conclusion.
By all accounts the three are independent events that coincided with the time of year when big moves happen, in between the combine and through the free-agent signing period.

Geno Smith trade begs the question: What are the Seahawks doing?
It was hard to look at that Seahawks roster and see something beyond mediocrity. This was true last week and became even more so when receiver DK Metcalf requested a trade Wednesday.
It’s been a position Seattle has been stuck in for several years, missing the past two postseasons with winning records and sneaking into the playoffs three seasons ago at 9-8.
It’s about the most unexciting place you can be in sports — barely relevant but with no juice for the future. So it seems general manager John Schneider pressed reset, for better or for worse.
And it could very well be worse.
On Friday, reports surfaced that the Seahawks will trade starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Raiders for a third-round draft pick, which was confirmed by Seattle Times reporter Bob Condotta. Hey, there have been third-round picks that have changed franchises, but the odds of grabbing a true impact player that low are slim.
So the big question is: Are the Seahawks punting on the 2025 season? Or are they targeting another quarterback that they think can be an upgrade over Smith?

Where things stand with Seahawks and DK Metcalf as rumors keep swirling
While the big news of the day came around 4 p.m. Friday with Geno Smith getting traded to the Las Vegas Raiders, earlier Friday the DK Metcalf rumor mill continued to churn.
The rumblings included a sentiment from a reporter from the NFL Network that New England may be the favorite to acquire Metcalf, and a report that the reasons Metcalf wants out of Seattle are money, warmer weather and a more stable quarterback position.
Let’s examine each.

Seahawks trading quarterback Geno Smith to Raiders, source confirms
In the biggest move of an already transformative week for the franchise, the Seattle Seahawks agreed Friday to trade quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a 2025 third-round draft pick (No. 92 overall), a league source confirmed to The Seattle Times.
The deal, first reported by the NFL Network, is expected to be finalized Wednesday, the day the NFL’s free agent signing period begins.
The trade came after contract talks between Smith’s and the Seahawks’ sides broke down this week.
Smith is entering the final year of a three-year contract worth a base of $75 million overall that is due to pay him $31 million this season.
