Jack Harrison, on loan from Leeds United, has endured a frustrating spell in the final third all season and his end product was questioned by manager David Moyes last week. Therefore, when he fired in the opening goal for Everton in the 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux, a huge load was lifted off his shoulders.
He had accumulated the most expected goal probability (2.9) among players in the Premier League who had yet to register a goal contribution before the clash against Wolves. Relieved after breaking his goal drought, Harrison now expects to march forward and continue putting in the hard yards for his side.
"Yeah, not quite how I imagined it [the goal to break a frustrating spell in front of goal]! But at this point, a goal is a goal and I hope I can contribute a lot more. I've been working very hard all season on and off the pitch really trying to achieve that so a bit of a relief at this point and hopefully, I can crack on now and contribute a lot more before the end of the season,” Harrison said after the game.
"I think just getting off the mark is always a positive. I think it's a nice moment tonight and I'll just keep working hard, keep doing what I've been doing and hopefully, I'll get a few more. I've always had that hunger to get goals and assists. To be honest, it's tough - it's highly frustrating when you're working as hard as you can and doing extras and everything you can and for some reason, it's just not coming off, so finally getting off the mark tonight is a positive.”
Despite his opening goal, Everton were pegged back just minutes later when Marshall Munetsi breached a hole in the Blues defence and beat Jordan Pickford at his near post from close range. The Blues held on for a 1-1 draw and managed to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to eight - their longest streak since 2017.
Reflecting on the game, Harrison said, “I think getting off to a positive start was good, but then the way we conceded soon after getting in front was a bit frustrating. I think, in the second half maybe we didn't quite play how we wanted to play and maintain our position and create as many chances as we wanted to, but I also think, we defended well as a team and we stuck together during a tough period and we were able to come away with a point away from home.
“So, there are some positives, and definitely, some improvements to work upon as well but I think overall, just happy to keep going with this run and hopefully we can carry it on into the next game before the international break."
Everton will return to home soil after two matches on the road as they prepare to host West Ham at Goodison Park next weekend. It is one of five remaining clashes to be held at this historic venue before the fans and the players are expected to bid goodbye ahead of the club’s highly anticipated move to the new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock next season.
"It's a very iconic, historic stadium for not only Evertonians but everyone in football. Of course, we want to finish strong for the fans but I think we've just got to keep taking it game by game. We're on a good run at the minute and, we've got another tough game next week I'm sure the fans will be right behind us again. We want to keep it going," the winger signed off.
