PM Modi calls Mauritius key Indian Ocean partner ahead of state visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted Mauritius as a “close maritime neighbour” and a “key partner in the Indian Ocean,” emphasizing the significance of strengthening bilateral ties during his upcoming visit.

In a departure statement, PM Modi expressed his intent to engage with Mauritius’ leadership to deepen the partnership and promote regional security and development.

“At the invitation of my friend, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, I am embarking on a two-day State Visit to Mauritius to participate in the celebrations of the 57th National Day of Mauritius. We are connected by history, geography, and culture. Deep mutual trust, a shared belief in democracy, and celebration of our diversity are our strengths,” PM Modi said.

He noted the progress achieved over the past decade through “people-centric initiatives” and expressed optimism that the visit would enhance India-Mauritius relations.

“I look forward to engaging with the Mauritius leadership to elevate our partnership and strengthen our enduring friendship for the progress and prosperity of our peoples, as well as for security and development in the Indian Ocean Region, as part of our Vision SAGAR,” PM Modi added.

The Prime Minister will visit Mauritius from March 11-12 as the Chief Guest at the country’s National Day celebrations on March 12. A contingent of the Indian Defence Forces and an Indian Navy ship will also participate in the event. PM Modi last visited Mauritius in 2015.

During his visit, PM Modi will meet Mauritius President Prithvirajsing Roopun, hold talks with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, and interact with senior dignitaries and political leaders. He will also engage with the Indian-origin community and inaugurate two key projects: the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre, both developed with Indian grant assistance.

The visit is expected to see the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation across various sectors.
