Sources say Smith becomes highest paid NFL Guard with new $23.4M Chiefs deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Chiefs’ Trey Smith has become the NFL’s highest-paid guard with a freshly inked $23.4 million deal.

[NFL insider Ian Rapoport](https://x.com/RapSheet) took to X on Sunday night, March 9, to report that his sources say Chiefs Guard Trey Smith has signed a $23.4 million franchise tag on a 1-year, fully guaranteed deal. However, the team would still like to work out a long-term deal.

The move officially makes Smith the NFL’s highest-paid guard.

According to Rapoport, the Chiefs had been working on this deal with Smith since late February. Smith, who originally entered the 2021 NFL draft as the 226th overall pick, will now enter his 5th season with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs indicated that Smith started all 17 regular games the year he was drafted. He allowed no sacks on Quarterback Patrick Mahomes in five post-season games, including Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was also named to the 2021 PFWA All-Rookie team.

This is the Chiefs’ second roster move today as the ink on a [$30 million deal](https://www.kctv5.com/2025/03/09/linebacker-nick-bolton-agrees-new-deal-with-chiefs/) with Linebacker Nick Bolton dries.
