The Atlanta Falcons are ensuring stability on their offensive line for the foreseeable future, agreeing to a two-year, $45 million contract extension with longtime left tackle Jake Matthews, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.
The deal, which includes $38 million in fully guaranteed money, will keep Matthews in Atlanta through the 2026 season. The 33-year-old veteran still had one year remaining on his previous contract, but this new extension locks him in for Years 12 and 13 of his NFL career-all spent with the Falcons.
Matthews has been the rock of Atlanta's offensive line since the team selected him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. A durable and consistent presence, he has started 161 consecutive regular-season games-the longest active streak among offensive tackles.
While Atlanta has undergone multiple changes at quarterback in recent years, one thing has remained constant: Matthews' protection on the edge. Whether as a blind-side blocker for Matt Ryan in the past or a front-side anchor for current signal-caller Kirk Cousins, Matthews has been a stabilizing force.
By extending Matthews, the Falcons reinforce their commitment to an offensive line that has been a strength under head coach Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. With the team looking to compete in a wide-open NFC South, retaining a proven leader like Matthews was a priority.
This move also provides continuity for Atlanta's run game, which has been a focal point with young stars Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier in the backfield. The Falcons have ranked among the league's top rushing offenses in recent years, thanks in large part to the work done in the trenches.
Now set to play at least 13 seasons with the Falcons, Matthews continues to solidify his place among franchise greats. He is already the longest-tenured player on the roster and could be on track to challenge Todd McClure (198) for the most games ever played by an Atlanta offensive lineman.
With the extension finalized, the Falcons can now turn their attention to further strengthening the roster ahead of the 2025 season. But one thing is clear: Jake Matthews isn't going anywhere.
