Khalil Mack re-signs with Chargers on one-year contract

A few weeks ago, we at Acme Packing Company discussed why Khalil Mack could be a perfect fit for the Green Bay Packers in free agency this offseason. Mack’s career trajectory compares remarkably closely to that of Julius Peppers when he surprised the NFL world and signed with Green Bay in 2014, and the Packers have a need for some more top-end pass-rushing productivity.

Unfortunately for the Packers, Mack will not be available when free agent negotiations begin at 12 noon ET today. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mack is re-signing with the Los Angeles Chargers, his former team, on a one-year contract. Mack’s deal is reportedly worth $18 million in fully-guaranteed money, a number that puts him 15th among edge rushers in terms of average annual value.

Notably, the Chargers recently released their other starting defensive end, Joey Bosa, in recent days. The fear of losing both of their starters at that position may have driven them to work with Mack ahead of the start of the negotiation period to come to an arrangement for the upcoming 2025 season.

Green Bay’s options on the free agent market, at least starting-caliber options, appear to be dwindling. Arguably the best pass-rushers under the age of 30 who are still unsigned are Chase Young (Saints) and Josh Sweat (Eagles); outside of those two players, there is already precious little available at that position. Reports have recently indicated that the Packers are interested in acquiring Dayo Odeyingbo, formerly of the Colts, but he has just 16.5 sacks in four seasons.

Stay tuned for updates on Packers-related free agency, which are sure to start coming in heavy after negotiations formally begin this afternoon.
