In the Premier League this season Manchester United have drawn seven games. Those have been against some of the biggest teams in the league such as Liverpool, Chelsea, and most recently Arsenal. They even beat reigning champions Manchester City in December, however, they still sit 14th in the league.
You could argue that [United](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-united-fc) thrive against top clubs because of their own history within the Premier League and that they know these clubs strategies and play better because they have historically spent so much time battling for top spots in the table.
Their ability to draw against top teams is a major strength which needs to be explored by management as these results are being diminished by their lack of ability to beat teams closer to them in the standings.
[Ruben Amorim’s](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/ruben-amorim) main goal should be figuring out how to maintain consistency because if your team can take Liverpool and Arsenal to a draw they should be able to put up a good fight against teams like Tottenham and West Ham who sit much closer to them in the table.
In the post-match press conference following the 1-1 result against Arsenal, Amorim said: “We press quite well, but in the future, I want to play a different football, to spend more time attacking with the ball in the last third, than defending in the low block.”
When asked about why their best performances seem to be against big teams he said, “I don’t know - maybe it is that in those games it’s a little bit more acceptable to play in the low block, and that can help us a lot. Against other teams, we have to push forward.”
Amorim’s contract with United runs until June 2027 and if they decide to stick with him through that deal it is clear through how he discusses the future that he has a plan for how he wants this team to play football.
A current issue with this United team comes with the fact they have lost 12 out of the 28 games they have played and have conceded more goals than they have scored. Their record against bigger teams shows major potential in the squad to hold their own in the big leagues, yet when facing off against smaller clubs their record has been so bad that they sit at 28 points.
The club are on a downward trajectory when it comes to finishing positions as they finished eightth last season and are currently sat in 14th this season. If United continue on the run they are now it will be the second time since the 2014/15 season that they have not consistently finished somewhere in the top six.
