Mikel Arteta's 200 Premier League games compared to some of the division's greatest managers

While he didn't get the result he wanted against Manchester United, the game marked a momentous occasion for Mikel Arteta as he reached 200 Premier League games as a manager. Having spent time working under Pep Guardiola's tutelage at Manchester City, the Spaniard tried his hand at management and was appointed Arsenal boss in 2019.

He's remained with the Gunners ever since and has pushed his side towards the top of the Premier League once again. They're yet to actually get their hands on the title under his stewardship, but they're in a much better position than they were prior to his arrival. 200 games as a manager in the toughest league in the world is no easy feat.

Arteta is now among a group filled with some of the best managers in Premier League history, such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and the aforementioned Guardiola. How do his first 200 matches in the division compare to those icons, though? Let's find out.

20 Greatest Managers in Premier League History Ranked

The Premier League's greatest managers of all time have been ranked in order.

Mikel Arteta's First 200 Premier League Matches

Win rate: 59%

While it's not always been plain sailing, Arteta has had a solid 200 games in the Premier League with Arsenal. He's won 59% of the matches he's coached in the division. He's won 118 games, drawn 37 and lost 45 over the course of his tenure at the Emirates Stadium. That means he's picked up an average of 1.95 points per game in the league so far.

His side have scored 379 goals under his guidance too, while they've conceded just 204. It's a very impressive record all things considered, despite the lack of silverware that has come with it. It's time to look at the records that Ferguson, Guardiola, Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp compiled in that same time period to see how he measures up.

Pep Guardiola

Win rate: 73%

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola

Having already built a huge reputation before coming to the Premier League, Guardiola arrived at Manchester City with massive expectations and he lived up to them and then some. Winning 73% of his first 200 matches in charge, the former Barcelona man has led the club to unprecedented levels of success, including a record four straight league titles in the years since.

This season, things haven't gone well for City and it's easily Guardiola's worst run during his time in England, but that doesn't take away just how good his start in England was. It's the best in Premier League history.

Jose Mourinho

Win rate: 68.5%

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho's move to Chelsea transformed the club from a potential contender to the powerhouses of English football, so it's no surprise to see his first 200 games in the Premier League were so successful. The Special One won 68.5% of his first 200 matches in the division and won back-to-back league titles in his first two seasons in England.

After leaving Stamford Bridge in 2007, it wouldn't be until Mourinho returned to England nearly a decade later that he reached 200 matches in the Premier League. Throughout those games, though, he won 137, drew 42 and lost 21. His sides scored 366 goals and conceded just 136. Wild.

Jurgen Klopp

Win rate: 63.5%

Jurgen Klopp

There are few managers quite as beloved by their former clubs quite like Jurgen Klopp is. When he took charge of Liverpool in 2015, the Reds were in a poor place and seemed worlds away from ever contending for the Premier League title. During his stint at Anfield, though, he turned them into one of the best teams in the world and helped lead them to their first ever Premier League trophy in the process.

Considering the state they were in when he took charge, you'd be forgiven for expecting the early portion of his time with Liverpool to be unspectacular, but he still managed to win 63.5% of his first 200 league games in charge. That's an impressive return that only seemed to get better the longer he remained at the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson

Win rate: 61%

Considered the greatest manager of all time, there are few that would argue about Alex Ferguson's place as the best in Premier League history at the very least. Like Klopp, the Manchester United team he took charge of is very different to the one he left and he transformed them into world beaters and an incredible amount of league titles.

His start with the side came before the Premier League was even launched, so when it came about, his side were already looking very impressive. Guiding United to the first two Premier League titles ever, Ferguson's Red Devils were always one of the best sides in the country and his 61% win rate throughout his first 200 Premier League games is testament to that.

Arsene Wenger

Win rate: 55%

Arsene Wenger

Interestingly, Arteta's win rate is actually higher than Arsene Wenger's was throughout his first 200 league games in charge of Arsenal. Considering the heights he eventually took the Gunners to, including an unbeaten campaign in 2003/04, the Spaniard still has a long way to go before he reaches the Frenchman's incredible legacy.

No one has managed more games in the Premier League than Wenger did, but throughout his first 200, he won 55% of them and helped lead the club to the top of English football. It's a level they haven't returned to in over 20 years now, but judging from his start in the job, there's no reason to believe Arteta can't get them over the line in the future.
