The Miami Dolphins' secondary is in flux. The team cut starting cornerback Kendall Fuller earlier this offseason, and they're widely expected to move on from starting safeties Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer.
Holland has been priced out of Miami's range, while Poyer was a liability for much of his one season in Miami. To stop the bleeding in the secondary, the Dolphins have placed a right of first refusal tender on starting nickelback Kader Kohou.
This doesn't guarantee Kohou's return to Miami, but it gives Miami the ability to match any contract he receives on the open market. With Jalen Ramsey the only locked-in starter in Miami's secondary right now, this move gives the Dolphins added flexibility headed into NFL Free Agency.
They'll still need to add an outside cornerback and two safeties, but they're hoping Kohou sticks around as their starting nickel. After a down 2023 season in Vic Fangio's zone-heavy scheme, Kohou bounced back under current Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver.
In three NFL seasons, Kohou has 180 tackles (148 solo), one sack, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, three interceptions, and 28 passes defended. Those aren't overly impressive numbers on paper, but Kohou has become a reliable piece in Miami's secondary.
